28 Lost in Translation: Canadian Paediatric Resident Education and Practice of Clinical Translation Services

Abstract Background Canadian paediatric residents provide care to many families with non-English or French language preferences (NEFLP). Lack of communication in a family’s preferred is inequitable and results inferior care. Professional medical interpreters offer route enhanced understanding safety. There no data available about residents’ use interpreters, making it difficult identify gaps practice develop targeted interventions improve patient experience. Objectives An anonymous, 19-item survey (REDCap) was designed evaluate: (1) interpreter services training centers; (2) resident perception their ease access, utility, value; (3) barriers drivers use. This represents the first collection from translator services. Design/Methods Eligible participants included all enrolled an accredited program. Descriptive statistics were performed STATA v15.1. Results 122 (approximately 19% eligible participants) responded. Approximately 40% reported previous use, 60% desired more training. Interpreter are widely but remain underused variety clinical situations: most often used during informed consent (98% ‘mostly’ ‘always’), family meetings (97%), history-taking (86%), least physical examinations (41%) bedside rounds (38%). Most (85%) felt they better patients who share primary (English French), compared prefer other languages. Conclusion confident skills when working NEFLP families, even present.
